Sounds of Essex

The Sounds of Essex is a youth music festival to celebrate young people’s learning in music across Essex. The organisers, Essex Music Education Hub, would like to inspire young people to engage with all genres of music, including classical and modern. The programme of events will include band stage and orchestral performances, singing and musical workshops. You can participate in all the activities and/or just watch the great performances given by some of the young people of our county.

Sounds of Essex: Youth Concert

Essex Symphony Orchestra

Christchurch URC | Saturday, June 30th | 6.30pm

Essex Symphony Orchestra presents a concert with a programme inspired by film, radio and TV. Performances include Bernstein’s West side story, Symphonic dances (1957) and Zimmer/Badelt’s Pirates of the Caribbean. The interval includes renditions from William’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Theme from E.T and Star Wars. Essex Symphony Orchestra is sponsored by M&G investments and all concerts held at Christchurch are in support of this season’s charity, J’s Hospice.

Little Stars Circus

The Bowl, Bond Street | Saturday, June 30th | 11am to 4pm

The team of performers at Little Stars Circus will present acrobatic demonstrations and perform incredible aerial circus arrangements involving aerial hoop, silks and trapeze. Some of the routines are inspired from movements practiced within traditions such as yoga, pilates and circus. The team at Little Stars is led by Dr Diana Entwistle, a professional aerialist and ice skater with a background in gymnastics and ballet. This is an opportunity to appreciate the balance, stamina, strength and flexibility skills of these elegant performers.

Pop Culture Poster Exhibition

Chelmsford Museum, Oaklands Park | Saturday, June 23rd to Sunday, August 19th

Sam Mayle presents an exhibition of pop culture posters. Sam is a self-taught illustrator whose presentation explores alternative themes around movie posters for popular films. Sam’s influences include Sci fi, fantasy and horror.

Hive Artists WW1 Exhibition: Renewal

Chelmsford Cathedral | Monday, June 25th to Monday, July 9th

A selection of mixed artwork exploring the themes around war, freedom, sacrifice, courage, renewal and peace. This exhibition comes as we celebrate the centenary of the end of the First World War. Each artist has approached the subject with sensitivity, some basing their work specifically on the Great War. This presentation is as much about the present as the past, how mistakes are often replicated, history repeating itself, but that ultimately, we find a way to peace and renewal.

Gallery 43: Celebrating the Essex Countryside Exhibition

Gallery 43, Moulsham Street | Saturday, June 23rd to Sunday, July 1st

Gallery 43 will host a show celebrating the Essex countryside from local artists – James Hewitt, Sue Spiers and Paul Franks. The gallery stocks a range of original contemporary British artwork together with a number of limited edition prints, ceramics, glass, sculpture and silver jewellery.

Wishbone Gallery Exhibition

Town centre | Saturday, June 23rd to Sunday, July 1st

The Wishbone Gallery plans to promote the work of twelve leading contemporary British artists, including the top selling commercial artist, JJ Adams. The exhibition will also include work from three local artists taken from a competition at Rivermead Gallery (Anglia Ruskin University).

Chelmer Fine Art Exhibition

The Chelmer Fine Art gallery will be offering for sale the portraits of visual artist Gilson Lavis (ex-Squeeze and the drummer for Jools Holland) who has painted many famous musicians including Lily Allen, Paloma Faith, Lulu and Smokey Robinson.

Essex Print Studio Printing Workshop

High Chelmer | Saturday, June 30th | 11am to 3pm

Essex Print Studio host workshops and classes in a range of different printmaking techniques including screen printing, etching and lino printing. This workshop is open to everyone, so why not take this opportunity to try your hand at printing your own piece of screen printed wallpaper.

Ian Bailey Wallpaper Exhibition

High Chelmer | Saturday, June 23rd to Sunday, 1st July

Ian Bailey is a creator of wallpaper designs that explore the notion that things aren’t as they may first appear – government propaganda and anti-establishment themes dominate. Bailey’s Rebellion 2 designs exhibit along names such as Lizzi Allen, Linda Florence and the Chapman Brothers. The V&A requested a sample roll to add to their collection of early 21 st century wallpaper designs which is displayed for talks on contemporary print.

Live Art with Steve Pablo Jones & Dave Stephen

Meadows | Monday, June 25th to Friday, June 29th

Steve specialises in portraits of musicians as well as landscapes and other contemporary work. Dave creates artistic pictures and objects as well as some practical items from Welsh slate. He brings his love of nature and the outdoors as well as a sense of absurdity to work a material many consider mundane and every day. Dave will be explaining the working methods and the history of slate and the slate industry and giving a demonstration.

V Flections Exhibition

Chelmsford Museum, Oaklands Park | Saturday, June 16th to Sunday, 2nd September

The V Flections exhibition by portrait artist James Wilkinson will focus on his on and off stage sketches, portraits, photographs and videos. Wilkinson is the official portrait artist to the V-festival (Rize) and takes inspiration from the classics of Caravaggio and the pop art of Peter Blake.

With submissions from 60 local artists the Chelmsford Festival Art Exhibition will be shown across the above two venues. With such an inspirational display of local talent, and a diverse range of photography, drawing, painting and illustration, from traditional to modern and everything in between.
