The Bearded Gypsy’s Trade Fayre will take over the High Street to present an eclectic array of products from unique designers and artists. There will be more than 30 unique pop-up craft, vintage clothing and art stalls, plus a range of street food options. Local chef Leon Lewis will also offer a delicious range of vegetarian cuisine. Other attractions include an open mic hosted by Katy Forkings and an underground house DJ set from Rob Bishop, US PEOPLE.

The stage in the Bowl (Bond Street) will host music and dance performances from Malcolm Bruce, The Ugly Guys, Jamie Williams & the Roots Collective, Grapevine Essex Dance and Delta Ladies amongst others.

Other City centre activities will include pop-up storytelling on sofas with Storyteller Shane, Justine de Mierre and Irish Storyteller Gerry Donlon, singing and camel walkabouts. There will be opportunities to make your own vocal recording with Run Wild Music, experiment with Raspberry pi and coding or rediscover the joys of board gaming. Book lovers can get comfy in Foyles’s pop-up storytelling armchair, listen to tales from around the globe and write their own stories. The Essex Book Festival (at the Transition Café) will entertain with traditional stories from Africa, Djembe drumming, poetry and flash fiction writing.

Our patron, the renowned musician and artist Gilson Lavis will be available, at Chelmer Fine Art Gallery, to meet and greet and talk about his music and art.

Hylands Artist Studios

Hylands Estate, Stables Visitor Centre | Sunday, June 24th | 10am to 4pm

A diverse group of artists and craftsmen will be sharing their enthusiasm for the visual arts by exhibiting their collections, demonstrating their work and running creative workshops. The genres of art include portrait, glass, encaustic, abstract and illustration. The displays will also contain examples of interior and knitting design and bespoke jewellery. James

Wilkinson and Hylands Studios, sponsors of this event, will include a programme of live music with pop, opera, show tunes and jazz.

Pop Culture Poster Exhibition

Chelmsford Museum, Oaklands Park | Saturday, June 23rd to Sunday, August 19th

Sam Mayle presents an exhibition of pop culture posters. Sam is a self-taught illustrator whose presentation explores alternative themes around movie posters for popular films. Sam’s influences include Sci fi, fantasy and horror.

Gallery 43: Celebrating the Essex Countryside Exhibition

Gallery 43, Moulsham Street | Saturday, June 23rd to Sunday, July 1st

Gallery 43 will host a show celebrating the Essex countryside from local artists – James Hewitt, Sue Spiers and Paul Franks. The gallery stocks a range of original contemporary British artwork together with a number of limited edition prints, ceramics, glass, sculpture and silver jewellery.

Wishbone Gallery Exhibition

Town centre | Saturday, June 23rd to Sunday, July 1st

The Wishbone Gallery plans to promote the work of twelve leading contemporary British artists, including the top selling commercial artist, JJ Adams. The exhibition will also include work from three local artists taken from a competition at Rivermead Gallery (Anglia Ruskin University).

Chelmer Fine Art Exhibition

6 New London Road | Saturday, June 23rd to Sunday, July 1st

The Chelmer Fine Art gallery will be offering for sale the portraits of visual artist Gilson Lavis (ex-Squeeze and the drummer for Jools Holland) who has painted many famous musicians including Lily Allen, Paloma Faith, Lulu and Smokey Robinson.

Ian Bailey Wallpaper Exhibition

High Chelmer | Saturday, June 23rd to Sunday, 1st July

Ian Bailey is a creator of wallpaper designs that explore the notion that things aren’t as they may first appear – government propaganda and anti-establishment themes dominate. Bailey’s Rebellion 2 designs exhibit along names such as Lizzi Allen, Linda Florence and the Chapman Brothers. The V&A requested a sample roll to add to their collection of early 21 st century wallpaper designs which is displayed for talks on contemporary print.

V Flections Exhibition

Chelmsford Museum, Oaklands Park | Saturday, June 16th to Sunday, 2nd September

The V Flections exhibition by portrait artist James Wilkinson will focus on his on and off stage sketches, portraits, photographs and videos. Wilkinson is the official portrait artist to the V-festival (Rize) and takes inspiration from the classics of Caravaggio and the pop art of Peter Blake.

With submissions from 60 local artists the Chelmsford Festival Art Exhibition will be shown across the above two venues. With such an inspirational display of local talent, and a diverse range of photography, drawing, painting and illustration, from traditional to modern and everything in between. There is something to suit every taste.
